“You’re sure it was a were-animal?” Sebastian asked, looking across the living room of the retreat.

Josh nodded.

“And you were able to use magic against it.”

Josh nodded again.

It was a sign of how much pressure Sebastian was under that he felt a need to keep asking. Sky, Josh, and I had been over what we’d seen with him, and I could see the strain it had put him under, trying to balance this against the other challenges we faced.

“Were-animals are being used as well as humans,” he said quietly. “We have to get in there.”

He looked at me and I could see the calculation in his eyes. We couldn’t just ignore this, but could we deal with it yet, while the curse still hung over us?

“Thank you, Josh and Sky,” Sebastian said. “Ethan, can you come with me?”

We headed down the corridor to his office. Once inside, he closed the door.

“How’s your arm?” he asked.

I pulled back the sleeve of the jacket I’d used to cover the wound. Sky had been so dazed from being thrown against a tree, I wasn’t sure she’d even noticed how badly I’d been hurt. I was happy to keep her from another worry.

“It’s healing,” I said. “But I don’t think my shirt will recover.”

Sebastian paced back and forth, running a hand across his head.

“We don’t know enough about this place,” he said. “What they’re doing. Why they’re letting their creations out. Who’s funding them.”

“I could look into it,” I said. “But then…”

“Then you wouldn’t be investigating the curse, and that has to take priority.”

I nodded reluctantly.

“Gavin’s convinced that they have Kelly,” I said.

“I know. I’m having trouble stopping him from storming the place, and I’m going to need something to appease him. Start working on a plan to take that compound, but keep it quiet—until the curse is dealt with, that’s our only priority.”
